What is meant by non-formal education?
The definition of non-formal education is a pathway to education outside formal education which can be implemented in stages and structured (Law No. 20 of 2003 Article 1 paragraph 2 concerning the National Education System).
Non-formal education is an educational path that aims to replace, add to, and complement formal education.
This education can be organized by special institutions appointed by the government based on national education standards.
And because they are guided by national education standards, the results of non-formal education can be valued on par with formal education.
Non Formal Education Objectives
Referring to the definition of non-formal education above, the main purpose of education outside of school is to function to replace, add to, and complement formal education.
Basically in non formal education there are two main objectives, namely;
To meet basic level learning needs.
For example knowledge about nature, literacy education, knowledge of health and nutrition, general knowledge and citizenship, and so on.
For further education needs complete basic level education and life values education.
For example meditation, art education, recitation, Sunday school, and others.
As we know, every individual needs education and learning in his life throughout his life.
By getting an education outside of school, each individual can obtain new knowledge and experience that is beneficial for his development.
However, quite a number of children do not have access to education for various reasons.
For example because of a lack of awareness from parents about the importance of education, limited costs, gender discrimination, and others.
Units and Examples of Non Formal Education
The education pathway outside this school can be divided into several groups, including:
- Institute for Training and Training
Institute courses and training are non-formal education organized by a group of people to provide knowledge, skills and certain mental attitudes to students.
- Study Groups
Learning groups are non-formal education consisting of groups of people who share experiences and abilities with each other.
The purpose of this study group is to improve the quality and standard of living of each member of the study group.
- Center for Community Learning Activities
According to Sutaryat, the Center for Community Learning Activities is non-formal education that serves as a place to learn from / by / and for the community.
The aim is to improve the knowledge, skills, attitudes, hobbies and talents of community members so that they benefit the community and the environment.
- Majlis Ta’lim
Majlis Ta’lim is a non-formal education organized by the community to improve knowledge, skills and attitudes related to Islam.
- Similar Education Unit
This is a non-formal education carried out by the community to increase knowledge, skills and attitudes, where coverage is broad and requires a legal basis.
